Weymouth Sports look to continue good run

CHRIS Hicks is hoping to have a few more experienced players back for Saturday's home clash with Piddletrenthide United in the Dorset Senior League (3pm).

Weymouth Sports have started to turn the corner in recent weeks but their joint-boss continues to strive for improvements with possible relegation still looming large.

Hicks, whose side sit third-bottom of the Dorset Senior League, just six points above basement boys Okeford United, who hold six games in hand, told Echosport: “Hopefully we will have a few back this week which will allow us to put out a slightly more senior side.

“Steve Alcock, Simon Austin and Stu Dixon should be available along with a few others and there is no doubt they make a big difference.

“It would mean we would be able to get back closer to the side that won at Kingston Lacy a couple of weeks back which was without a doubt our best performance for a while.”

Commenting on the situation at the bottom of the table, Hicks went on to add: “We have six home games left out of nine and we need to make them count. If we can do that and get some momentum going we should be okay.”

Upwey & Broadwey will welcome back Pete Bochonko from suspension when they make the trip to Okeford (3pm).

The Weymouth outfit were down to the bare bones for last Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Witchampton United but boss Steve Reynolds is hoping that will not be the case this weekend.

He said: “Pete is back but we will just have to wait and see on the others.

“Frank Budden and Michael Barton should return but Sam Purnell is still a doubt and Richard Frost is still injured.

“We will just have to see how everyone is and then go from there.

“There is also a chance the game could be postponed. Okeford’s pitch has not been playable for most of the season and with the weather we have had this week I am sure Saturday's match will be in doubt too.”

Portland United Reserves will be out to end a 12-game winless streak at Stourpaine (3pm).

The islanders are currently in a period of transition and boss Steve Cowards is confident his side can get a result this weekend.

He said: “The results have not reflected our performances and with a bit more experience in the side now I am sure we will start turning things around soon.

“Stourpaine are one place above us at present so it’s important we come away with some points.”

Recent signings Chris Squibb and James Turrell are expected to feature again for the Blues but George Preston remains a doubt.
