Positive Weymouth see off Buccaneers

FOLLOWING a disappointing performance last time out, Weymouth took on the Bucc-aneers with a more positive approach which ultimately paid dividends.

The hosts took an early lead after a shot on goal was deflected by the keeper on to Susie Stone’s stick at the top of the circle and she found the net.

Weymouth kept up the pressure, attacking down both sides of the pitch with Lynsey Melhuish, Casey Foot and Lynda Drewitt working well on one side and Chloe van Crugten, Emily Sauven and Emily Austin down the other.

The second goal came from some quick passing between Sauven and Austin and a cross to Drewitt was duly dispatched for a 2-0 lead. It was a much-deserved goal for Drewitt who had several efforts go close.

Starting the second period in control, Weymouth maintained their pressure and man-of-the-match Anneka Rogers, Berni John and Tamsin Ribbons broke up any attempts to get through the home side’s defence.

Sophie Foot made a return to the fold for her first game of the season and she helped win the corner which resulted in Wendy Butcher smashing home a third.

WEYMOUTH met top-of-the-league Wimborne at Queen Elizabeth Leisure Centre and felt the full wrath of the Channel Division Two title-chasers.

In the first half, Wimborne demonstrated how they had achieved their first-place league status and opened the scoring within the opening few minutes.

They kept up this display of strength and Weymouth conceded three more goals before half-time.

Not all the play went Wimborne’s way though, as Weymouth did earn a short corner and Dervla Ireland went close to scoring but her shot struck a post.

In the interval, Weymouth regrouped and made some positional changes and came back out fighting.

They were rewarded with an excellent goal for Caitlin Dive, which was set up by Lily Young after a magnificent break from deep in her own half.

Despite strong battling in defence and midfield by Megan Taylor and Jo Ray, who shared the spoils for man of the match, Wimborne went on to score another to make it 5-1.
