Ryan to rescue for Bees
11:06pm Tuesday 19th March 2013 in Sport By Adam Summers
SAVIOUR: Ryan Dovell
BRIDPORT 2 WINTERBOURNE UNITED 2
RYAN Dovell was the saviour for the Bees tonight as they hit back twice against fellow strugglers Winterbourne United.
The visitors were on top for much of the contest but Bridport dug in and managed to claim a share of the spoils to stretch their unbeaten run to six games.
The result keeps the St Mary’s Field outfit above third-bottom Winterbourne on goal difference with a game in hand and boss Trevor Senior was clearly relieved afterwards.
He said: “I have to admit Winterbourne were better than I thought they would be.
“They are a very youthful side and they were sharp all over the pitch. In fact, they came at us like a train at times and gave us quite a few problems.
“We never really got going at all but we managed to hang in there and on reflection I was happy to come away with a point.”
Analysing the game in more detail, Senior went on to add: “They went 1-0 up close to the 20-minute mark when a couple of deflections saw the ball fall to one of their lads who tucked it away.
“We could not get a foothold in the game at that point but then out of nothing Ryan made a goal for himself.
“The turn he made was perhaps a bit fortuitous but he showed great desire to get to the ball before the keeper and that made it 1-1 at half-time.
“We felt we could do a lot better after the break but if anything they put us under even more pressure with Sean Lillington pulling off a couple of good saves.
“They also had a couple of other efforts that went just off target before Shane Evans put Ryan away, only for his shot to go just past the near post.
“They then went 2-1 up when a shot ricocheted off a post and fell kindly for them once again to tuck home the rebound.
“We looked really up against it then but thankfully we managed to force an equaliser with Jamie Filkins beating a couple of players and setting up Ryan who got just enough on it to grab his second.
“We looked like a side that hadn’t played for two weeks but hopefully that has now blown the cobwebs out ahead of another big home game against Longwell Green this Saturday.”
