Portland pay price as Stourpaine strike
PORTLAND UNITED RESERVES 0
LADY Luck deserted the Blues yet again as they suffered a disappointing defeat at Stourpaine in the Dorset Senior League.
The visitors were arguably the better side for much of the contest but they were unable to convert their chances and paid the price when the Steamers netted twice in the second half.
The loss has stretched Portland United Reserves’ winless run to 13 games and boss Steve Coward felt for his players afterwards.
He said: “We went 1-0 down to a penalty 10 minutes into the second half. One of their players ran across Dan Skelton, who couldn’t get out of the way, and the lad just fell over his leg.
“I couldn’t see whether it was a penalty or not but it was tough to take because we were on top for most of the game.
“Mitch Conning hit the bar twice and we also had a couple of efforts cleared off the line but the ball just wouldn’t go in for us.
“Che Curran also had a good chance, which their keeper saved, and there were a couple of goalmouth scrambles too, but in the end they went on to get a second with just two minutes remaining when our keeper Ian Bickerstaff went to clear the ball, only for it to hit their striker and go back into the net.
“When your luck is down things just don’t seem to go for you and unfortunately this was another one of those occasions.
“In fact, had you watched the majority of the game and not known the score you would have thought we would have won it comfortably.
“Afterwards the lads were really disappointed they lost but not with the way they played, and all we can do now is pick them up again and move on.”
The Blues have taken just two points from the last 39 available, which has seen them plummet to 11th, just five points above the bottom two, having played more games than the three teams below them.
Their next assignment is a trip to basement boys Okeford United on March 30.
