MEDALS will be decided today in the high-performance 49er skiff classes at the second European Sailing Federation (EUROSAF) Champions Sailing Cup event in Holland.

The British Sailing Team members who have been competing at this week’s Delta Lloyd Regatta in the men’s 49er fleet include Portland Olympian Stuart Bithell and crew Chris Grube.

Other pairings include Echo columnists Alex Tobutt and Stuart Appleby, Dylan Fletcher-Alain Sign; Dave Evans-Ed Powys; Nic Asher-Fynn Sterritt and John Pink-Simon Wheeler.

Dorset sailor Kate Macgregor and crew Nicola Groves are among Britain’s women’s 49erFX contenders, along with Penny Clark-Mary Rook; Kate Macgregor-Nicola Groves; Frances Peters-Sophie Ainsworth.

Racing began on the waters of Ijsselmeer, near Medemblik, on Tuesday and the final medal racing for the eight other classes is due to take place tomorrow.

Portland Olympian Ali Young and Paralympic trio John Robertson, Hannah Stodel and Steve Thomas have their sights on a podium finish in the Laser Radial dinghy and Sonar keelboat classes respectively.

In the 2.4mR Paralympic class, both Portand’s 2012 champion Helena Lucas and her biggest rival Megan Pascoe – medallist at all three World Cup events this year – are vying for honours in the 26-boat fleet.

Poole Olympian Lucy Macgregor and her crew Tom Phipps are competing in the Nacra 17 multihull class.

The new EUROSAF Champions Sailing Cup is a series of five regattas in the Olympic and Paralympic classes designed to complement the ISAF Sailing World Cup series.

The first event kicked off at Lake Garda, Italy earlier this month, where Ed Wright claimed gold for Great Britain in the Finn class and Bryony Shaw picked up silver in the RS:X women’s windsurfing event. Both sailors have opted to skip this Dutch leg of the series, but the British team is still fielding a 48-sailor entry.

The Sail for Gold Regatta, hosted at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy from June 9-13, will be the next EUROSAF event followed by Kiel Week in Germany from June 22-26 and the Semaine Olympique Francaise from October 9-13.
