THE RAF Weymouth Beach Volleyball Classic will return at the start of next month after missing a year due to a clash with the Olympics.

One of the star attractions will no doubt be Shauna Mullin who will be playing alongside fellow Olympian Lynn Beattie.

Mullin partnered Zara Dampney at London 2012 while Beattie was captain of the women’s indoor squad.

There will also be plenty of interest in the men’s event. Not only has it attracted entries from the Israeli national team but the men’s GB squad will also be training throughout the week on the permanent courts by The Boat cafe.

The Classic is due to take place from August 1-4 and it is already heavily oversubscribed in the women’s event and almost full in the men’s section, with another week to go before the closing date.

Meanwhile, in the Weymouth ‘Go Spike’ League, veterans Dave James and Jules Stout pulled off their first win of the season in the A section although they did not have it all their own way.

Firstly they had to overcome the improving Lewis Edwards and Martin O’Neill in the semi-finals, which they eventually managed 16-14.

They then met Dom Cosserat and Mat Palmer in the final which proved an intriguing battle, with neither side having more than a point lead throughout the majority of the contest until the greater experience of Stout and James saw them through 17-15.

The B section was won by Damien Harding and Mat Chalker, who defeated Sarah Warren and Jake Hetherington 15-9 in the final.

The players will be back again tomorrow and anyone who would like to join is very welcome.

Registration is at the permanent courts between 6pm and 6.30pm.
