THE Weymouth Beach Volleyball Classic returns to the seaside town for a 30th year tomorrow, coming back bigger and better than ever after a break for last summer’s Olympics.

A whole host of top talent is going to be on show across the three days of competition, including several Team GB stars from London 2012.

Number one seeds in the men’s event are Robin Miedzybrodzki, pictured inset, a three-time former champion and winner in 2011, and his playing partner Kirk Pitman, the current GB women’s head coach.

The GB development side of Jake Sheaf and Chris Gregory are expected to be a major threat, while Weymouth’s own Ryan Stout is hoping for a successful weekend with Matt Butcher ahead of the Under-20 European Championships later this month.

Shauna Mullin and Lynne Beat-tie are likely to feature prominently in the women’s tournament, the former having played at the Olympics with Zara Dampney.

Beattie, for whom it will be a first appearance on the sand, also competed in London as captain of the women’s indoor volleyball team.

Dampney and another former Weymouth favourite Lucy Boulton are currently involved in the European Championships in Austria but are set to make a visit on Sunday.

The other notable women’s entries are the veteran combination of Denise Austin and Mel Coutts, who between them have won in Weymouth on 12 occasions, and 2011 champions Gabby Madreka and Laura Plonka.

“The Weymouth RAF Beach Volleyball Classic is a great sporting event for all the family to enjoy,” said Ian Bruce of Weymouth & Portland Borough Council’s tourism and culture department.

“We are thrilled that the RAF continues to support the championships and it is a great event to have in the Dorset Festival of Sport programme.

“People can enjoy a fun weekend of watching some of the most talented beach volleyball teams in the UK for free in the fantastic surroundings of Weymouth Beach.”

The Classic takes place across 10 courts in an area around the sand modeller end of the beach.

The main centre court has free seating for 500 people and play starts with an exhibition match at noon tomorrow, followed by a men’s qualifying competition at 2pm.

Play then continues in the men’s and women’s sections from 9am on Saturday and the later rounds on Sunday culminating in the women’s final at 3pm and the men’s final at 4pm.

The finals will be covered by Sky for transmission later in the year.
