Champion Blues make perfect start
PORTLAND UNITED 3
SHERBORNE RESERVES 0
THE Blues got their defence of the Magna Dorset Premier League crown off to the perfect start at Grove Corner on Saturday.
Ryan McKechnie, Carl Mutch and Lewis Clarke grabbed the goals as Gary Bailey’s side eased their way into the new season with three points on home turf.
Bailey was understandably thrilled to begin the campaign with a win but did feel the hosts needed to be more clinical in front of goal.
They can work on that aspect of their game tomorrow night when Bridport Reserves, 2-0 winners away to Merley Cobham Sports, are the visitors to the island.
It was Sherborne who started off the better team on Satur-day and it took 43 min-utes for the Blues to break the deadlock when Mutch and Clarke set up Mc-Kechnie to fire in from just outside the box.
Mutch doubled the lead on the hour, stabbing in from close range foll-owing a melee in the Sherborne area, and Clarke, one of Bailey’s sum-mer recruits, netted late on after some neat play from Ashley Smith.
“It was a good start for Lewis,” said Bailey. “He worked hard and didn’t get a lot of joy chasing lost causes in the first half.
“The ball was bouncing away from him a lot but he stayed patient and deserved his goal.”
He added: “Lewis Whyton captained the side well and didn’t put a foot wrong in def-ence, Alex Hall-oran was neat and tidy in mid-field and Carl Mutch worked hard up front.
“They caused us a few problems early on but we got going after that and getting the first goal before half-time was just what we needed.
“It was a good all-round performance but there is plenty to work on. We created lots of chances but need to be more clinical. You always want to get off to a good start and now we’ve got a benchmark to go on.
“We’re happy with the first game and hopefully there is more to come. The more matches we play the more cohesive we will be as a side.”
Ross Carmichael misses the Bridport fixture due to work commitments, though Ross Doid-ge, Dan Newnham and Simon Crouch are all set to feature.
Blues: Weeks, Smith, Whyton, B Doidge (Gould 70), Carmichael, Halloran, McKechnie, Mutch (Churchill 85), Linaker (Carter 60), Toghill, Clarke.
Match ball sponsors: Alison and Lance Sapsford
