FOOTBALL: Bees punished for a second time
BRIDPORT 1 SHERBORNE TOWN 2
BRIDPORT threw away a lead for the second match in a row at St Mary’s Field to slip to back-to-back defeats on home turf.
Jamie Filkins bundled in from close range just before the break on Tuesday night to put the hosts 1-0 up.
But two goals from long throws in the last quarter saw rivals Sherborne snatch all three points, much to the dismay of Bees’ boss Trevor Senior.
“It was the classic game of two halves,” he said. “I thought we played well in the first half and Sherborne didn’t really get into it.
“We created a few chances and should have been more than one goal ahead at half-time but we were pleased with how things were going.
“Our final pass or shot was a bit off target but everything else was fine.
“But in the second half we didn’t do what we had been doing in the first and they changed their system and both their goals came from long throw-ins, which was very disappointing from our point of view.
“We didn’t create much going forward but three points were there for the taking and over the first two games we should have got at least two after taking the lead in both.”
Senior had replaced Max Buckler with Chris Clarke in the starting line-up and, when Filkins pounced after Shane Evans’ shot had been deflected, things looked good for the hosts.
Sherborne levelled with 20 minutes left when Alan Hill misjudged a throw and the ball was turned in at the far post.
And it got worse for Bridport on 80 minutes as Senior’s men failed to clear the ball and they were made to pay.
With most teams in the Toolstation League Premier Divi-sion having played two fixtures Bridport are one of seven clubs yet to pick up a point.
Bridport are in FA Cup action this Saturday and return to league football on August 24 when they go to Bitton, who have a win and a loss from their opening matches.
