BEES: Bridport set-up Martyrs preliminary round FA Cup clash
HENGROVE ATHLETIC 0 BRIDPORT 2
BRIDPORT eased into the preliminary round of the FA Cup and a home tie with Merthyr Town thanks to goals from Tom Richardson and Ryan Dovell in Bristol.
The Bees exited the competition at the same stage last season but made no mistake this time around, guaranteeing at least £1,500 for the club’s coffers in the process.
However, there was a sting in the tail for Trevor Senior’s side with Dovell sustaining a groin injury that could be quite serious.
Despite playing into a swirling wind in the first half it was the visitors that started the stronger and Dan Wise went close from all of 25 yards.
And Wise had a big hand in the opening goal on 25 minutes when his corner was headed in by Richardson, who was playing his last match before a three-game ban.
Bridport doubled their advantage just before the break and Wise was the supplier again. His centre found Dovell and despite being off balance, the striker looped the ball over the home keeper.
Hengrove came out fighting in the second half but the Bees were equally as strong on the break and Dovell struck a post following Chris Clarke’s run and shot.
The pacey Matt Morley was always a threat down the right and it was from one of his crosses that Dovell injured himself – Matt Condliffe replaced him with 20 minutes left.
Indeed, Condliffe could well have scored with his first touch but was unable to make proper contact with the ball to test the Hengrove stopper.
Sam Filkins was rarely called into action at the other end and Bridport saw out the game comfortably to progress to the next round.
“We deserved to win the game,” said Senior. “It was important we won after how we did in the cup last season and the money on offer this year.
“We can look forward to playing Merthyr at home in a couple of weeks and we should have a big crowd in for that one.
“We needed a win on Saturday after losing our first two in the league and the lads are buzzing again.
“I decided to bring in Matt Morley on the right and his pace was really useful down the wing, and we put some good passing moves together.”
Bridport, however, will be without Dovell, Richardson and Wise for their next league fixture against Bitton on Saturday.
Bees: S Filkins, Morley (J Filkins 75), M Buckler, Evans, Watts, Hayter, Legg, Wise, Richardson (Senior 81), Dovell (Condliffe 70), C Clarke
