CRICKET: Weymouth skipper Matt Lawes looking for quick response
MATT Lawes has admitted the quicker the first team bounces back from this season’s disappointments the better it will be for Weymouth Cricket Club as a whole.
The Seasiders’ fate was sealed on Saturday following their postponement against Dorchester and with Division One beckoning for both clubs next summer, all the attention has now turned to the small matter of rebuilding.
Weymouth skipper Lawes told Echosport: “Every team goes through cycles and it is just about how quickly you can get out of them.
“Fingers crossed we will only have a short stay in the league below and are back playing Premier League cricket very soon.
“The quicker we can get through this period and get back to where we should be, the better it will be for the club going forward.”
When asked what the Seasiders need to do to ensure a quick return, he added: “I think the key is to get a goal that everyone is united in.
“When there is a goal there that everyone can strive for the availability of players tends to improve.
“When we were competing for titles and a place in the top three people would do anything to be a part of it and somehow we need to find that momentum again.
“People don’t tend to want to play so much when you are down there struggling and that has been our problem over the last couple of years.
“Unfortunately that happens sometimes. It is just an attitude thing and is something we need to address if we are to get things moving in the right direction again.”
Lawes also reckons the club’s growing youth section will also play a pivotal role in the Seasiders’ future fortunes.
He added: “We have some good young players at the club already but what we could do with is a group of seven or eight coming up through the different age groups together.
“When you get that and have a group that share the same goal it can make a huge difference, and that is something we haven’t had for quite a while now.
“A lot of hard work has been going on this summer to rebuild the youth section at the club and hopefully we will start seeing the benefits of that over the coming years.”
