FOOTBALL: Comeback makes Bridport boss proud

BRIDPORT RESERVES 4 HAMWORTHY RECREATION 3
ROBIN Townsend was mightily proud of his Bridport players after they fought back from 3-2 down to edge a seven-goal thriller at St Mary’s Field.
The Bees’ boss was disappointed that the visitors didn’t have to work hard for their goals, but he was “over the moon” with the character his side showed to secure the three points.
Bridport went behind to a penalty 10 minutes in when Sam Day was adjudged to have brought down the Hamworthy striker in the box.
The spot-kick was converted but only after the referee, who had originally waved away appeals from the visitors, consulted his linesman.
But it didn’t take long for the Bees to equalise through a superb Ben Clarke finish, however, Hamworthy regained the lead in comical circumstances soon after.
A long punt up field was misjudged by home keeper Billy Fleet and the ball bounced over his head before sailing into the net.
It was all square again though when Ashley Clarke came up from the back to power in a bullet header from a corner.
After getting themselves back into proceedings, Bridport conceded the lead for a third time just prior to the break, allowing a Hamworthy player to poke home after a header had hit the bar.
But with 20 minutes to go the sides were all square yet again, this time Robin Jones slotted in from 18 yards to set up a grandstand finish.
And the winner arrived on 75 minutes with Ben Clarke turning provider for Ashley Staines to tap in and put the hosts ahead for the first time.
“I was over the moon with the result and second-half performance,” said Townsend.
“Hamworthy didn’t really create much and to be honest we gave them their goals.
“The penalty looked like a penalty from where I was but I wasn’t happy with the way the Hamworthy players surrounded the referee.
“It was a very professional performance from us after half-time and that’s something we didn’t show last season.
“We thoroughly deserved the win but we need to address how we gave away the goals.”
Bridport Reserves are in Bespoke Teamwear Dorset Premier League action tonight (7.30pm) when they host Weymouth Reserves.
As the first-team doesn’t have a game, Townsend will have both Sam Charles and Tom Richardson to call on.
