FOOTBALL: Lane leads 314 to charity triumph
LAST season’s double winners Rendezvous – now known as 314 – added another piece of silverware to their trophy cabinet after a Ricky Lane-inspired victory over Dolphin in the annual curtain-raiser to the new Weymouth Sunday League campaign.
Lane netted a first-half hat-trick and added a fourth in the second period of his side’s 5-1 win in the clash between the league’s reigning Premiership and Champion-ship kings.
Paul Myatt scored 314’s other goal in one of two charity shield matches to take place at Portland United’s Grove Corner ground.
In the other game, Les Hallett Trophy winners Belvedere went down 7-4 to Dolce Vita, who were drawn to play the fixture after Len Mahoney Cup runners-up Rodwell withdrew from the league – 314 also won the cup last season.
League chairman Phil Watson was quick to thank Portland United for hosting the matches and said that close to £2,000 had been raised for MV Freedom, a boat based in Weymouth Harbour that offers sensory experiences for disabled people on the open water.
The Weymouth Sunday League is up and running again on September 1.
