TERRAS: Sam Poole determined to keep his place
SAM Poole is well aware that he must maintain his rock-solid form at the heart of the Terras’ defence if he wants to keep hold of his place in the team.
The Weymouth back four have been pivotal in making sure the team’s goal has yet to be breached in the wins against St Neots and Frome.
And Poole has certainly taken his chance to impress alongside Nathan Walker, even getting on the scoresheet on Tuesday night.
Many expected the two Walker brothers, Nathan and Michael, to start the season together in the centre of defence but the latter’s injury problems have seen Poole come to the fore.
“Brendon told me I was going to be having an opportunity and now it’s up to me to keep my place,” he said.
“Hopefully if I keep playing like I have and the team is doing well I will stay in the side.
“I don’t want to be sitting on the bench because I know the lads who are there now are champing at the bit to be involved.”
He went on to add: “Everyone was expecting Nathan and Michael to be at the back together but I knew that if I came in and did well I would keep playing.
“And if I keep doing the right things then hopefully it will continue.”
Poole says the Walkers have been quick to offer him advice on how to improve his game and so far that seems to be working.
Two games over the bank holiday weekend will no doubt put the Terras’ defence to the test again with Redditch at home on Saturday and Poole Town away on Monday.
