FOOTBALL: Wembley treat for Dorchester Stars
7:00pm Friday 23rd August 2013 in Sport
DORCHESTER Town Youth’s Under-13 Stars team were given a very special treat at the home of English football.
Players, parents and team helpers gleefully accepted an invite from FA group head of sponsorship Peter Daire to attend the Community Shield between Manchester United and Wigan earlier this month.
As well as the game, the visitors from the county town enjoyed a tour of Wembley Stadium and received complimentary match programmes and England bad-ges.
They also had a chance meeting with legendary Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler who talked about his distinguished broadcasting career.
The opportunity to make the trip to London arose when Daire met up with Stars’ coach Bob Mowlem last October.
Mowlem was the runner-up for the FA’s Outstanding Contrib-ution to Community Football People’s Award last season and got chatting to Daire at the presentation evening.
And although neither of them realised it straight away, the two men had met previously when Daire, who lived in the seaside resort of Weymouth as a youngster, had been coached by Mow-lem at Southill Youth Club.
During his time at Southill, Mowlem and Kevin Conroy help-ed supervise teams playing in the South Dorset Youth League and organised many trips for the members to watch Division One football matches.
With those outings in mind, Daire promised to put something on for Mowlem’s current team and the rest is history.
Daire said it was one way of thanking Mowlem for his contribution to youth football over more than 50 years.
