Terras rock champions Portland
WEYMOUTH RES 4
PORTLAND UNITED 0
REIGNING league champions Portland saw their unbeaten start to the season brought to an abrupt end at the Bob Lucas Stadium.
Boosted by the inclusion of a handful of first-team squad members, the Terras took a one-goal lead into half-time before surging clear in the second period.
Oscar Preece, Luke Winsper, Adam Anstey and Carl Mc-Clements found the net with both managers agreeing that Preece’s strike, seconds after a crucial save by Weymouth keeper Jordan Tewkesbury, was one of the main turning points.
Until the opening goal 20 minutes in, there hadn’t been any clear-cut chances for either side and other than a Lewis Whyton header there wasn’t much more of note for the rest of the half.
The outside of a post came to the Terras’ rescue early in the second half and they took full advantage of that near miss when Winsper made it 2-0.
As Portland heads began to drop the home side seized their chance to pile on the agony. A bullet header from Anstey added a third and the hard-working McClements got the fourth, tucking away Gareth Will’s cross in the 90th minute.
“There were a couple of little turning points in the game but I don’t think anyone can say we didn’t deserve it,” said Terras’ boss Jake Richmond.
“Jordan pulled off a great save low down from Adam Linaker, we went up the field and Oscar scored when we could have been a goal down.
“After that, Portland only really looked dangerous at set-pieces and I was confident at half-time that if we kept doing the things we had been doing well we would win.
“Luke got the second after they had hit a post and in the last half an hour they looked out on their feet.” He added: “Before Tuesday we had taken points off every team in the league during my time in charge, apart from Portland, so it was nice to put that right.
“People will say we only won because we had some first-teamers in the side, but apart from Matt Groves, the others haven’t really played this season.”
As for Blues’ manager Gary Bailey, he and his players won’t be dwelling on the result for long.
He said: “Weymouth put out a strong side and it’s their prerogative if they want to play first-team players.
“I thought we were edging it slightly before the first goal, but that changed the game and we struggled to recover.
“It was a disappointing result but we’re not panicking and you don’t turn into a bad team overnight.”
