BOWLS: Open tournament is cancelled
Organisers hope to stage the event again in the near future but this year’s competition will not go ahead.
Staged on the greens of Greenhill, Melcombe Regis and Wellworthy, playing numbers had started to fall just over a decade ago.
And despite the best efforts of the organising committee to promote it, entries weren’t sufficient enough this year to hold the 54th edition of the tournament.
“The Olympic year saw a dip in numbers and this year, like the Weymouth Tennis Tournament, much work was done by the committee in promoting the bowls tournament, both locally and nationally,” said tournament secretary Dave Wise, pictured above.
“Although small numbers of en-trants from Bristol, Poole, Weston-super-Mare, London and Wales, along with a limited number of local players from Dorchester and Wey-mouth, have registered an entry they have not been in their usual numbers to make the tournament viable.
“At a recent meeting of the tournament committee the decision was taken to cancel the 2013 tournament due to a lack of entries.”
He added: “It is hoped that the tournament will once again be resurrected in the coming years.”
The committee would like to thank the following for their invaluable help sponsoring the tournament over the years; Weymouth Co-Operative Funeral Care, Bluebird Care, florists P & M Read, Dorset Bowls Resort, The Crown Hotel, Weymouth & Portland Borough Council, The Marlboro Restaurant, printers Sherrens and Jenny Andrews.
