TERRAS: Weymouth suffer first defeat of the season
9:57pm Tuesday 3rd September 2013 in Sport
BIDEFORD 2 (Howe 19, Squire 48)
WEYMOUTH 1 (Yetton 44)
WEYMOUTH’S unbeaten start to the season in the Calor Southern Premier Division came to an end this evening at Kingsley Road.
The Terras never really found their feet in a scrappy match which saw Bideford create the better chances.
Stewart Yetton did fire the visitors back level after Owen Howe had opened the scoring, but when Kevin Squire regained the home side’s lead there was no way back.
The Robins were even reduced to 10 men in the closing stages but the Terras were unable to take advantage.
For the first time this season Weymouth freshened up their starting line-up with Ashley Wells replacing Barry McConnell, who picked up a slight groin injury in the previous match against Cambridge City.
There was also a change on the bench where young keeper Jordan Tewkesbury returned following a run out for the reserves on Saturday.
There were also some familiar faces in the Bideford squad in the form of ex-Weymouth trio Ben Gerring, Craig Duff and substitute Richard Groves.
All eyes were certainly going to be on Gerring, who was not only returning from injury but also coming up against Yetton for the first time since the two had a much-publicised fracas during a training session at Truro City in April – an altercation that left the ex-Plymouth Argyle defender with a broken jaw.
Fresh off the back of a 1-0 win at Bashley, Bideford made the brighter start and on 14 minutes went close through Sean Downing, whose fine header was tipped over the bar by Jason Matthews following Matt Bye’s corner.
The hosts then took the lead five minutes later when Downing’s shot ricocheted invitingly into the path of Howe, who duly tucked the ball home for his fourth of the season.
Although the Terras were behind, they were more than matching their opponents and after Saul Halpin had wasted another good opening for the Robins by firing high and wide, the away side equalised.
The sucker punch arrived just a minute before the break when Yetton pounced on a loose ball and unleashed an unstoppable shot from 15 yards, which flew into the top right-hand corner.
Despite that strike Weymouth still made a switch at the break with midfielder Luke Winsper replacing Mark Ford, which saw Ben Joyce move up front.
However, just three minutes into the second half the Terras found themselves behind when suspect defending allowed Squire to slot home a rebound after Matthews had initially denied Duff.
The visiting keeper then had to push over a header from Howe before Scott Walker had a crack from a free-kick at the other end which Steve Oliver dealt with comfortably.
The Terras were huffing and puffing without creating any chances but on 74 minutes they were handed a potential lifeline when Bye lunged in on Sam Poole and rightly received his marching orders.
However, despite pushing Nathan Walker and Scott Walker further forward in the closing stages, Weymouth failed to break Bideford down in the time remaining.
In fact Oliver hardly had a save to make much to the disappointment of the travelling fans.
