RUGBY: Plummer is new Weymouth head coach
CHRIS Plummer is the new first-team head coach at Weymouth RFC after the club decided to promote from within.
The RFU Level Three coach has been at the club for a number of years and fills the role left by Paul Harding at the end of last season.
Weymouth open their Southern Counties South campaign at home to Corsham a week on Saturday and Plummer has been busy getting his players ready for the season ahead.
Plummer is aware that Harding will be tough to follow but insists he will put all his playing and coaching experience to good use.
“The senior players have achieved significant success over recent seasons,” he said. “The challenge will be to maintain this progress.
“We have retained many of last year’s squad and have a talented group of youngsters coming through who are determined to make their mark.
“The club is well led and supported by coaches, staff and volunteers and I am very much looking forward to the challenge.”
Club president Des Quick is delighted that Plummer, who turned out for Westcombe Park, Dartfor-dians and Bromley in his playing days, has been persuaded to take up the post.
“This is first class news for us,” said Quick. “Chris took some persuading as his head coach commitments had to be fitted in with those as Head of Year at Wey Valley School.”
Plummer qualified as an RFU Level 3 coach more than 10 years ago and gained experience as lead coach and selector with the Dorset & Wilts youth set-up.
Weymouth are always keen to recruit players of all ages, sex and abilities and currently runs three senior men’s teams and one ladies’ team.
It also has sides at mini and youth level, from under-6s to Colts, as well as girls’ teams including under-15s and 18s.
Senior men’s training is on Tuesday and Thursdays from 6.30-8pm and all abilities are welcome.
