FOOTBALL: Bees shocked by four-goal Cranes
BRIDPORT RESERVES 2 CRANBORNE 4
POOR finishing and individual errors cost Bridport Reserves as they fell to a shock defeat against struggling Cranborne at St Mary’s Field on Saturday.
Following successive victories over Swanage Town & Herston and Holt United, the Bees went into this Bespoke Teamwear Dorset Premier League clash full of confidence against a Cranes side that began the afternoon propping up the table with just one point from six.
Despite the clear differences in form, Bridport failed to make the most of their opportunities and duly paid the price as the spirited visitors claimed their first victory of the campaign.
Losing boss Robin Townsend said: “To be fair to Cranborne they probably deserved it in the end but having said that the final scoreline certainly didn’t reflect the game.
“We created a lot of chances but poor finishing let us down badly while at the other end individual errors led to three of their goals.
“Their keeper also made five or six great saves but in the end we could only have ourselves to blame.
“It’s a consistency thing and to be honest it is very hard to work out the reasons behind it.
“On the road we seem to be great but at home in recent times we have just been another average side and I don’t know why that it is.
“No disrespect to Cranborne but we should be beating sides like that.
“However, you cannot take anything away from them because they showed great team spirit throughout and just seemed to want it that little bit more than us on the day.”
Ben Clarke and Robin Jones were the men on target for the Bees, who initially took the lead, only to be pegged back before half-time.
Townsend added: “The goals we conceded were very disa-ppointing.
“The first came from a diagonal pass and because we were not close enough to our men it allowed one of their lads to get in and fire the ball into the top corner with a great finish.
“That made it 1-1 and then just before the break they took the lead. This time one of our lads tried to chest the ball back to the keeper instead of just clearing it, and it ended up falling to their forward who tucked it away.
“After that we knew the next goal was going to be important and after missing a load more chances early in the second half they then grabbed another with a free header at the far post.
“We then pushed on and got one back with 20 minutes to go, only to then get caught out again on the break in the closing stages.”
The defeat has seen the Bees drop to seventh in the table while Cranborne are now off the bottom, one point above Wareham Rangers.
