BEES: Devon defeat for Bridport in FA Vase
PLYMOUTH PARKWAY 4 BRIDPORT 2
BRIDPORT’S run in this season’s FA Vase failed to get going with defensive errors proving costly at Bolitho Park.
All of the home side’s goals came through mistakes from the Bees as the visitors crashed out of the competition in the first qualifying round.
They were, however, denied what appeared to be a clear penalty at 3-2 down which could well have led to a different outcome had it been awarded.
With Ryan Dovell, Steve Smith, Sam Charles, Alan Hill, Chris Senior and Matt Condliffe all missing, Chris Luke was brought in for his first game of the season.
And things seemed to be going well for the Bees with both sides cancelling each other out in the first half an hour.
But disaster struck when a Bridport throw went straight to a Parkway player and keeper Sam Filkins was given no chance.
Five minutes later the lead was doubled and again it was a goal that could have been avoided – a clearing header went sideways rather than forward and the hosts conceded for a second time.
The Toolstation League side halved the deficit on 42 minutes through a Dan Wise penalty but the hosts, who play in the South West Peninsula League, grabbed a third after the break.
Matt Morley and Ashley Staines were brought on in a bid to get the Bees back into it, and Staines played a part in setting up Morley to make it 3-2 with 10 to go.
Soon after, Staines had a goal-bound effort that the Bees were convinced had been handled on the line, but after the referee waved play on Parkway were gifted a fourth to put the game beyond their opponents.
“Our defence has been playing well in the last few weeks but on Saturday we suffered some lapses that gave them four goals,” said Bridport assistant manager Kev Leigh.
“We played well for the first 25 minutes but there were too many mistakes after that, although we thought we had a penalty which could have made it 3-3.
“It was a disappointing result because we did play a bit better than we have done in the last couple of games.
“Chris Luke came in and was superb in the midfield. It didn’t look like he had been away and his experience is a massive help.”
Bridport are back in action on Saturday when they entertain Longwell Green Sports in the league. They should have some of Saturday’s absentees back for that fixture.
Bees: S Filkins, J Filkins (Gale 75), Clarke, Buckler (Staines 67), Hayter, Evans, Wise, Watts, Richardson, Legg (Morley 67), Luke
