TRIATHLON: Portland ace is top ranked in Super Series
3:50pm Monday 9th September 2013 in Sport
TRIATHLETE Chris Perham is celebrating after securing top ranking in the British Youth and Junior Super Series.
The Portland ace finished runner-up in the final event of the competition to secure the number one spot, which he hopes will lead to bigger and better things in the future.
Perham, who will compete again in the junior section next year, said: “The British Youth and Junior Super Series is a competition for up-and-coming triathletes to compete for points.
“There are five races with three counting towards the rankings.
“With one race to go I was ranked first but with all to play for.
“I had worked out that if I finished the event outside the top four, another triathlete could still gain enough points to take top spot with a top-two finish.
“Also, if another competitor won and I didn’t finish in the top six, he could also claim it.
“I came out of the swim good enough to keep in the first bike pack but, due to the fast pace, when I got on to the run I could feel a stitch coming on.
“Despite this I still managed to stay tucked in behind the leader in second place, hoping I would have enough energy to sprint nearer the end. “Unfortunately though, he ended up kicking away and I came in just after.
“It would have been nice to have won the race but second place was still good enough to remain first overall, which was really pleasing.
“The British Series rankings are used to look at the up-and-coming talent in triathlon and finishing top puts me in a good position to be chosen to compete abroad next year.”
The race included a 450m swim, a 10km bike ride and a 2.5km run, which Perham completed in 30mins 53secs, just four seconds behind the winner.
He added: “My last race of the season is this week when I take part in the ITU Sprint Distance Triathlon World Championships in Hyde Park in London.
“My race is on Friday at 8am.
“After that I will be back training hard for the start of the 2014 campaign.”
Perham is looking for sponsorship for next season.
