FOOTBALL: Chickens hit Blandford for six
CHICKERELL UNITED 6 BLANDFORD UNITED RES 1
THE Chickens toasted their return to the Stalls by hitting Blandford for six on the first day of the Dorset Senior League season.
Winger Steve Welch was the star of the show, scoring five times, while Elliot Stone netted the sixth – Welch could have had a double hat-trick had he not missed a first-half penalty.
And the impact of being back at their spiritual home, having pulled out of the Dorset Premier League at the end of last season, showed with a good turnout on the terraces.
“It’s only our first game but it was most enjoyable and there was a buzz around the club too,” said Chickerell manager Steve Coward.
“The whole reason we came back to Chickerell to play our home games was shown on Saturday.
“It’s our home ground and we have to make the most of it.”
Commenting further, Coward added: “It was only 1-0 at half-time and they equalised five minutes into the second half.
“That meant we had to knuckle down and we dominated the rest of the game.
“In the end our fitness showed and we kept going for the full 90 and Blandford ran out of steam after about an hour.
“Steve got five of the six goals and if he had got a sixth he would have joined two others, me included, to have scored that many in a game for the club.
“All of our goals came from open play, which was good to see, and Steve’s five were all good strikes.”
Captain Liam Miles is unavailable for the trip to Westland Sports on Saturday, but Coward hopes to have a few new faces in his squad by then.
