FOOTBALL: Seven heaven for Dorchester Sports
DORCHESTER SPORTS 7 WINCANTON 0
DORCHESTER Sports started life in Dorset League Division One in fine style with a 7-0 thumping of Wincanton.
The hosts handed debuts to keeper Michael Barton, Simon Shapcott and Lewis Amor, the returning Craig Bridle started on the bench and captain Karl Hicks was fit after missing all summer with a broken foot.
The result could well have been slightly different had Wincanton not missed an early penalty after just two minutes when Carl Hopkins was adjudged to have mistimed a tackle in the box.
Sports then started to dominate play with Dan McDonald pulling the strings in the middle of the park.
Adam Symes and Alex Travers both missed good chances and Dan Anderson’s cross was headed over by Hicks, but halfway through the first period the opening goal did come.
McDonald played in Travers down the right and he pulled the ball back for Symes to net.
Sports did get sloppy after this but got to half-time still in the lead.
The second half began with Sports on top again and when they got a free-kick 30 yards out it was Anderson who found the bottom corner to make it 2-0.
A double change saw Bridle and Tom Godfrey come on to give Sports even more firepower and the substitutions worked.
First, Bridle crossed for Hicks to head home then Bridle added one himself from close range.
Danny McHale was then brought into the action and it only took him a matter of minutes before his 30-yard strike found the top corner.
Bridle and Hicks then helped themselves to a brace each to complete the rout.
This was a great start for Sports and keeps their unbeaten run in 2013 going.
Next up is a tricky away game at Stourpaine on Saturday.
