FOOTBALL: Rory's scorcher seals fine debut for Upwey
UPWEY & BROADWEY 4 GILLINGHAM RESERVES 1
Pete Bochonko and Richard Frost also netted while Sam Nichols and Charlie Kenderdine both staked a claim for Upwey’s third.
Boss Steve Reynolds was delighted with his side’s display against the team that finished just one point behind them in the table last term.
The Weymouth outfit went in front on seven minutes as Bochonko headed in a Nichols cross before the latter hit both posts with a stinging shot.
Frost volleyed in Kenderdine’s cross in the 17th minute to make it 2-0, though the Gills were allowed back into the game after that.
Half-time came just at the right time for Upwey and having regrouped the result was put out of Gillingham’s reach as two became three.
A Kenderdine effort was too much for the keeper to handle and as the ball was going in Nichols nodded over the line, although the former claimed it had already crossed the whitewash.
The three points were sewn up when youngster Zima cut in from the right and left fly with a superb strike that flew in.
Reynolds brought on Sam Purnell for Bochonko to shore up the midfield and despite Nathan Aston conceding a late penalty, the hosts saw out the game with ease.
“Any win against them would have been a great start because they are a good side,” said Reynolds. “But we played really well, albeit in patches, and the score didn’t flatter us at all.
“There is room for improvement but it was good to see the new faces like Rory and Steve Alcock play so well on their debuts.
“Ethan Devaney worked tirelessly up front and brought other players into the game well.
“We’ve still got players to come back from suspension and I’ve brought in Lee Pattison though he was injured for Saturday.”
Upwey: Wyatt, Aston, Porteous, Alcock, Pearce, Zima, Kenderdine, Frost, Nichols, Devaney, Bochonko (Purnell 70)
