AFLOAT: Now or Never - Rig settings are the focus
4:00pm Thursday 12th September 2013 in Sport
WE ARE in the final throws of our pre-World Championship preparation, which seems to involve a lot of running around sorting out spare parts and doing maintenance on the boat.
While this isn’t the most exciting aspect of the campaign, it will hopefully make life much easier out in France, so is worth the effort.
As well as this, we have managed to get together with a few other 49er sailing teams to some training on the water.
A few of the younger teams who are aiming to break into the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) squads were in Weymouth so we were able to organise some practice sessions.
The focus of our training was to work on our rig settings and we learnt a lot by trying different things.
To test settings we line up all the boats and do multiple runs up and down the harbour with some boats keeping everything the same and others changing different controls.
This enables us to have a consistent benchmark and understand what makes us faster and slower.
To keep up the training with other people we have signed up for a coaching programme at the worlds. This is a great scheme organised by the class association and sponsored by Seiko.
Its aim is to support independent teams that don’t have the full support infrastructure that the national squads enjoy.
It pairs up a small number of teams with a coach, employed by the association, who supports them before and during the event.
This is a really positive thing and will hopefully help us get the best result possible.
