FOOTBALL: Jarvis - It's time to deliver
STURMINSTER MARSHALL 3 UPWEY & BROADWEY 0
The Weymouth outfit are seen by many as one of the favourites to lift the Dorset Senior League title this season but on the evidence of this latest performance those predictions may well prove to be ill-judged.
The 2012-13 runners-up just never got going at Churchill Close as Jordan Fisk struck a fine hat-trick to hand the hosts their second victory of the season and leave Jarvis extremely frustrated.
The Upwey player-coach told Echosport: “We could have no excuses because Sturminster were fitter and stronger than us and by far the hungrier side on the day.
“They hunted us down in packs and in Jordan Fisk they have a very good forward who scored some fine goals.
“Yes, we had a few people missing but football doesn’t come down to whose there and who isn’t, it’s about what happens from the first minute to the 90th, and we didn’t do anywhere near enough.
“Chickerell United were also under-strength at the weekend yet they went and won 2-0 at Westland Sports and that is the difference.”
Upwey have finished in the top three in the Senior League in three out of the past four seasons and Jarvis is beginning to question whether they have what it takes to finally win it.
He added: “I think the fact that people are considering us as one of the favourites for the title this season is farcical and it’s about time a few of our lads stop believing their own hype.
“You can have all the potential in the world but realising it is a completely different thing.
“We know the talent is there but at times our mental strength and determination has to be called into question.
“It all comes down to hard work and application at the end of the day, and we need to get that right first before we can even start thinking about anything else.”
Upwey’s next encounter is at home against current league leaders Corfe Mullen United this coming Saturday.
Upwey: Wyatt, Aston, Alcock, Porteous, O’Callaghan, R Zima, Frost, Purnell, Nichols, Devaney, Bochonko. Sub not used: Nicholson.
