BEES: Luke blasts Bridport to deserved victory
BRIDPORT 2 ILFRACOMBE TOWN 1
THE Bees chalked up a second home victory in succession thanks to a fine strike from Chris Luke.
Bridport took control from the outset and were the better team throughout much of the contest. Tom Richardson went closest early on for the hosts when he struck the crossbar but it was not until the 33rd minute that the opening goal finally arrived.
Ryan Dovell, returning from injury, was fouled at the near post by Josh Heafield allowing Dan Wise to fire home from the spot to give the hosts a deserved lead.
Frank Paxton then found the side netting at the other end before Shane Evans had a header cleared off the line for the Bees just after the break.
Ilfracombe were certainly batt-ling hard and after Dovell and Richardson both saw attempts fly wide, the visitors equalised when Stan Paxton beat Sam Filkins at his near post with 17 minutes remaining.
That setback clearly stunned the home fans but just moments later, the Bees regained their lead with a fantastic strike from Luke.
The all-action midfielder cut across the visiting defence before unleashing a great shot into the net from the edge of the box to put his side in command once more.
From there the hosts never let go and should have added a third in the closing stages when Wise had a second spot-kick saved following Kevin Darch’s handball.
Back from his honeymoon, Bridport boss Trevor Senior said: “It was a very good performance.
“We knocked the ball around well and created some good chances, so I was pleased.”
Commenting on Luke’s winner, Senior added: “It was a great goal. He got the ball on the right, cut across the box, did a little trick and then fired a great shot across the keeper into the far corner.
“We definitely deserved it and it could have been a lot more comfortable than it was.”
The victory has lifted the Bees to 12th in the Toolstation Western Premier Division table but they have played more games than eight of the teams below them.
Bees: S Filkins, J Filkins, C Clarke, Evans, Watts, Hayter, Luke, Wise, Richardson (M Buckler 83), Dovell (Smith 65), Morley (Condliffe 77).
Bees’ Man of the Match: Dan Wise.
