TERRAS: Stewart Yetton and Ben Joyce earn Terras cup replay
WEYMOUTH 2 BOGNOR REGIS TOWN 2
TWO goals in the last five minutes rescued Weymouth from an early FA Cup exit.
The Terras looked to be crashing out at the second qualifying round stage after going 2-0 behind, but a stirring fight back saw strikes from Stewart Yetton and Ben Joyce force a replay on Tuesday night.
Michael Walker made his long-awaited debut for the Terras with boss Brendon King making two changes to the side beaten by Hemel Hempstead last week.
Ashley Wells and Luke Winsper made way for Walker and the returning Danny Clay, who was back after injury.
Wells and Winsper were named on the bench along with Mark Ford, Matt Groves, Jamie Symes and young goalkeeper Jordan Tewkesbury.
The Rocks made the better start and created several opportunities as the Terras were pressed back.
The lively Arron Hopkinson had the best of Bognor’s chances when he fired inches wide with an effort in the third minute.
Weymouth’s first chance arrived on 12 minutes when Joyce stabbed a shot wide.
Then five minutes later, Joyce broke clear and pulled the ball back for Scott Walker who could only hit his shot past visiting keeper Mark Zawadski’s left-hand post.
After a niggly period when referee Gary Parsons blew for a plethora of free-kicks, Nathan Walker had a header ruled out on 23 minutes after his brother Michael was adjudged to be offside.
Nathan Walker then went close again five minutes later when he headed over from a Scott Walker free-kick.
However, it was Bognor that finished the first period the stronger. Ben Johnson saw a scorching strike fly over Jason Matthews’ crossbar after some fine trickery on the edge of the box.
Five minutes before the interval, Craig Robson struck a 20-yard free-kick over before the Terras had a big let-off in added-on time when Ollie Pearce failed to connect in front of goal after a fine cross from Hopkinson.
Bognor were on the front foot at the start of the second half with Hopkinson seeing his drive ricochet over the bar. Then, a minute later, Pearce’s header went wide of a post.
At the other end, Dave Allen headed over from Scott Walker’s free-kick and the two players combined four minutes later with the same outcome.
Ten minutes into the half Luke Burbidge worked his way clear after being found with a great ball by Allen, but he could not pick out anyone in a Terras’ shirt following a disappointing centre.
Bognor then took the lead on 62 minutes when Scott Walker tripped Hopkinson in the box after the lively winger had turned the Terras’ skipper too easily and the referee had no option but to award a penalty.
Johnson confidently strode up to side-foot past Matthews as the Rocks grabbed the lead.
The visitors were now on top and Hopkinson found striker Ben Godfrey who failed to connect as the ball flew across the goal-mouth.
Bognor then doubled their lead on 66 minutes when man of the match Hopkinson curled in a superb effort from 25 yards, giving Matthews absolutely no chance.
Godfrey then went past Nathan Walker as if he wasn’t there but hit his shot across the face of Matthews’ goal.
Sam Poole was booked for a lunging tackle on Godfrey on the edge of the box but the free-kick was wasted as it was smashed into the Terras’ wall.
The hosts were now playing with four strikers as they looked to salvage something from the game with Ford and Groves joining Yetton and Joyce up top.
And the game was turned on its head with five minutes to go when Yetton pounced. The Terras’ frontman blocked a clearance from the keeper after a poor back pass and slotted the rebound into the empty net to give his side hope.
The home faithful were then ecstatic as Joyce was found by Groves and fired home from 10 yards to level the scores with three minutes to go.
There was no further goalmouth action and the two sides will have to do all again at Nyewood Lane tomorrow (7.45pm).
