FOOTBALL: Dorset boys slip to defeat in Devon
Under-16 S&W Counties Championship
DEVON 2 DORSET 0
DORSET lost their opening match in the S&W Counties Championship, going down to defeat at Newton Abbot.
The visitors started the brighter of the two teams, pushing Devon back in their own half for long spells without causing the hosts’ defence too many problems.
Flyn Begley and Dan Morris both had shots deflected for corners by home keeper Callum Klun.
The half-time break seemed to serve the hosts well as they pressed Dorset back on the defensive with keeper Taylor Hibbs making two sharp saves before leaving the field through injury.
Fifteen minutes after the break, an incisive counter-attack from Devon put Fletcher Williams through on the left and he unleashed an unstoppable shot over the top of Gerrard Benfield in the Dorset goal.
Two minutes later, Dorset almost conceded a second when a shot hit a post before rolling in front of goal, evading a striker, and being scrambled to safety.
With both teams using their repetitive substitutions to the full, Dorset began to press the home side back again.
They went to close to equalising when a Lee Watkins free-kick floated onto the top of the crossbar and then a Sam Glatzel goalbound shot was tipped over by Klun in the home goal.
In time added on, Will Nesbit connected with a free-kick to put Devon two up to secure the three points.
Dorset’s next match is on October 20 when they host Berk/Bucks at the County Ground, Hamworthy.
