TERRAS: Weymouth progress after cup drama
BOGNOR REGIS TOWN 1 WEYMOUTH 4
A DRAMATIC night that included three penalties, three red cards and five goals ended with the Terras progressing through to the third qualifying round of the FA Cup.
Having come back from two down in the first meeting between the two clubs on Saturday, Wey-mouth were staring down the barrel again at Nyewood Lane until two sending offs changed the whole complexion of the evening.
Bognor, unbeaten in 10 games in all competitions before kick-off, took the lead and looked assured until Doug Turk and keeper Mark Zawadski both received their marching orders either side of the break.
That resulted in three goals in six minutes for the Terras, who eventually went on to see the game out in comfort despite losing Ashley Wells to another red card in the closing stages.
Following his side’s narrow escape at the weekend, it was perhaps no surprise to see Brendon King make a couple of changes to the Terras’ starting XI with Wells and Mark Ford coming in for Dave Allen and Sam Poole, who both dropped to the bench.
The double switch saw Michael Walker partner his brother Nathan at the heart of the defence while Ben Joyce dropped back into midfield alongside Danny Clay. Bognor were clearly keen to stamp their authority on the tie in the early exchanges and after a frantic opening few minutes, they got the early breakthrough they were after when Michael Walker tripped Ben Godfrey in the box.
That presented an 11th-minute penalty to Ben Johnson and just like in the first game when he opened the scoring from the spot, he made no mistake, powering the ball past keeper Jason Matthews in emphatic fashion.
The Weymouth stopper had already pulled off a fine save to deny Ollie Pearce moments earlier and it was Bognor that threatened again midway through the half, when a three-man move ended with Johnson firing wide.
At the other end, the Terras were creating very little with their only attempt of note in the opening half-hour coming from Stewart Yetton, whose speculative effort was comfortably saved.
Having won their last five at home in all competitions, Bognor were looking in command but on 42 minutes they threw the visitors a lifeline when Tuck stamped on Clay.
The home player lashed out after being fouled by the Wey-mouth midfielder and left referee Ian Fissenden very little option but to send him off.
Clay also received a booking for his part in the incident, which was immediately followed by another contentious clash involving Nathan Walker just moments before the break.
Bognor felt the visiting centre-back had deliberately thrown an elbow at one of their men but this time Fissenden’s card was only yellow.
Allen replaced Clay at the start of the second half and after Pearce had wasted a good shooting opportunity for the hosts, Weymouth began to take control.
Luke Burbidge saw a header clip the crossbar before Yetton raced through and was upended in the box by Zawadski.
The keeper protested his innocence but Fissenden once again flashed the red card before Scott Walker beat substitute stopper Tom Boyle with the resulting spot-kick.
Down to nine men, Bognor were clearly in a desperate state and it was no surprise when the Terras took full advantage with two goals in as many minutes.
First, Ford fired home from the left-hand side of the box before Yetton latched on to a pass from Joyce to make it 3-1.
Weymouth now looked home and dry but with 15 minutes remaining they then lost Wells to a second bookable offence for bringing down Arron Hopkinson for the third penalty of the game. The full-back had previously been cautioned for another foul earlier in the half.
Johnson again stepped up to the spot but this time was foiled by a fine save from Matthews to the Terras’ relief.
After that, the Rocks’ hopes had all but gone and with six minutes remaining Yetton put the final nail in the coffin by capitalising on a defensive mix-up to finally bring the drama to an end.
