RUGBY: Greenfield bonus for Puddletown
PUDDLETOWN 36 NORTH DORSET THIRDS 10
THE Villagers were determined to build on their good start to the season in Dorset & Wilts Two South, and they did just that with a bonus-point victory at Greenfields.
The home side began with intensity, clearly determined to put their mark on the game using their mobile pack to move the opposition around the park.
And the pressure soon told with outside centre Jez Michael-Beale breaking the line to score following a number of phases. Skipper Tom Yeatman converted.
From the kick-off Puddletown secured possession and quickly moved the ball to winger Chris Thomson, who beat two defenders to score from 40 metres out.
With the Villagers dominant, further scores seemed inevitable and so it was that full-back Sam Stockley used pace and neat footwork to go over for a third try. Yeatman added the extras.
Continued pressure from the Puddletown pack allowed their backs to exploit space out wide and with a series of accurate passes Thomson was put in for his second try and the hosts’ fourth.
Despite being 24-0 down, the visitors started the second period determined to slow the game down and exploit their large pack.
But the Villagers’ defence showed discipline to contain the pressure and secured some good field position from a number of counter attacks.
From one of these the backs launched an attack that saw Michael-Beale run in his second try, converted by Yeatman.
As Puddletown looked to increase their lead, North Dor-set’s fly-half intercepted a loose pass from the home side and crossed for a consolation.
The home side kept launching attacks and Stockley touched down for another. Yeatman again converted.
North Dorset defended resolutely and secured a second try from another intercepted pass but a 36-10 win was Puddletown’s at the final whistle.
“This was a good win for us and we are starting to play the style of rugby that we enjoy,” said Yeatman. “What is more pleasing is that new players in our squad are really showing what they can do.
“The performance of the squad was great but the standout performance was from James Perrett.”
