TRIATHLON: Perham bags place with top performance squad
CHRIS Perham has won a place in the Triathlon Performance Squad at Loughborough.
The Portland ace is over the moon with his selection and has no doubts it will help boost his development in the sport.
Perham told Echosport: “I am now in Loughborough studying and recently I found out I have a place in the Triathlon Performance Squad.
“There were a lot of us trying to get in the squad with only two places available.
“I now have a triathlon coach, brilliant sporting facilities to train in and a structured training programme with other triathletes, one of them being Lucy Hall, who competed in the 2012 Olympics.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity and I am now looking forward to the months ahead as I begin my preparations for the 2014 season.”
Perham recently came fifth in the elite men’s section at the ITU Sprint Triathlon World Championships in London.
Ninety-two athletes from 13 different countries took part in the race which included a 750m swim, a 20km bike ride and a 5km run.
The talented teenager added: “The weather in London was horrible all day but I had a good swim and got out on the bike first with a nice lead.
“However, the bike was non drafting and with the white lines being slippery from the rain I crashed when I went to take the second corner.
“As I was the first bike there, the crowds were shouting ‘get back on GB’ and I was probably on the floor for about 40 to 60 seconds.
“On the second lap the bumpers were put up on the railings and marshals were waving red flags.
“Due to that fall I was a bit stiff and sore on the run, and in the end I came in fifth in a time of 1.04.54.
“The winning time was 1.03.56 from a guy from Norway with New Zealand in second, USA third and Australia fourth.
“Being the first Brit home was good but I think I would have medalled had I not come off my bike.
“The race was hard but it was also a great experience.”
