FOOTBALL: Chickens held by Gills in stalemate
CHICKERELL UNITED 0 GILLINGHAM TOWN RES 0
THE Chickens kept a fourth clean sheet in succession but lacked the creativity to break down a resolute Gillingham defence at the Stalls.
Steve Coward was happy with the way his side bossed the game, though with a smattering of players missing there was always a chance they were going to lack a certain degree of sharpness in front of goal.
United stay second in the Dorset Senior League table, four points behind leaders Sturminster Marshall, who thrashed Kingston Lacy 5-1.
Josh Why came the closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half before both sides cancelled each other out again after the interval.
“We defended really well but just didn’t create enough,” said Coward. “We played some good football and had a lot of possession but it wasn’t always in the right areas.
“Take nothing away from Gillingham, they are a good side, but we should have come away with the three points.
“But we still got a point and that’s four games now that we haven’t conceded, so defensively it’s going well.”
Dan Welch, Steve Welch, Zach Falcus, Mark Lambert and Steve Lambert were all missing for the Chickens.
However, as they are without a game this weekend it will give those players with knocks the chance to come back for the next fixture at home to Corfe Mullen.
The break also gives David Sowerby the chance to recover from a blow to the ribs suffered in the second half on Saturday.
An ambulance had to be called when the substitute, who had only been on the field for three minutes, came off worst in a heavy challenge with a Gills player.
Before the game, Coward was able to bring in a couple of new faces in the form of defenders Willie Gibson Jnr and Che Curran.
“With the new lads coming in and players coming back from injury the side can only go from strength to strength,” added Coward, who worked with Curran at Portland United Reserves.
“I’m happy with how things are going and we’ve only conceded one goal so far this season.
“The aim is to go out and win games and get a team out on the pitch that’s hard to beat.”
