TERRAS: Brendon King ready for battle with Hammers great
BRENDON King is looking forward to pitting his wits against a West Ham United legend when the Terras entertain Braintree Town in the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup on October 26.
Alan Devonshire, a previous winner of the competition, will no doubt have the Skrill Premier outfit pumped up for their visit to the Bob Lucas Stadium but the task certainly does not faze his opposite number, who is already relishing the challenge.
King told Echosport: “They are two divisions above us and seventh in their league, so it’s a very tough draw.
“They are going to be massive favourites and everyone is going to expect them to win but in turn that takes a lot of the pressure off us.
“It’ll just be about going toe-to-toe for the 90 minutes and giving it our best shot. If we do that and make life difficult then who knows?
“It’s certainly a challenge we are looking forward to.”
Devonshire was part of one of the biggest shocks in FA Cup history in 1980 when he helped the Hammers, who were in the Second Division at that time, defeat Arsenal in the final.
The former England international provided the cross that helped set up Trevor Brooking’s winning goal against the Gunners 33 years ago.
Looking forward to locking horns with the 57-year-old, King added: “Having played at the highest level and won the FA Cup, he knows exactly what the competition is all about and will no doubt have Braintree revved up on the day.
“He is a West Ham legend and to have the opportunity to go up against him is just fantastic.
“These are the types of occasions you want to be involved in, and with the FA Cup, the further you go the bigger they tend to get.
“Although it is going to be very difficult, the incentives are there and hopefully we can rise to the test.”
The winners of the tie will receive £12,500 and a place in the first round proper.
