WIMBORNE WAYFARERS 1
WEYMOUTH went goal crazy on the way to a thrashing of Wim-borne Wayfarers in West Clubs Women’s League East Division.
The hosts responded to defeat by Team Bath in style with Linda Drewitt netting a hat-trick and Emily Sauven scoring twice.
Captain Emily Austin, Sophie Foot, Jo Brazier, Caitlin Dive and Susie Stone also found the target to give Weymouth their second win of the campaign.
The Wimborne defence held firm in the opening stages at Redlands and attacks from Stone, Sauven and Luce Bryne were snuffed out.
But after wave after wave of attacks, Weymouth finally won a penalty corner and Sauven converted for a 1-0 lead.
Anneka Rogers, Foot, Chloe Van Crugten and Naomi Gadian stayed resolute at the back for the hosts, while Austin, Dive and Drewitt linked well up front, leading to a well-worked goal for Dive.
An uncharacteristic mistake allowed Wimborne to pull one back but order was restored and Weymouth added three more before the break through Drewitt, with two, and Stone.
Weymouth came out hard in the second half as they knew Wimborne would be raring to go after a disappointing first period.
Within two minutes, gaps appeared in the visitors’ defence and Sauven was given an opportunity which she took with aplomb to make it 6-1.
Then after seeing an effort saved by the visiting keeper, Drewitt pounced on the rebound to complete her treble.
A similar goal was scored by Brazier for 8-1 and then there was a superb solo effort from Austin.
Receiving the ball on halfway, she took on several players and ran rings around the Wimborne defence before striking a reverse shot for Wey-mouth’s ninth.
The final play led to a foul by Wimborne in the D and Foot executed the penalty corner routine expertly.

GILLINGHAM LADIES 5
WEYMOUTH got off to a good start with Lara Blundell chipping the ball into the top corner after an excellent pass by sweeper Gill Ogg.
Gillingham came back strongly with their attackers testing Weymouth’s defence and they levelled before half- time.
The second half saw Gillingham throw everything they had at Weymouth, however several short corners were cleared by Claire Harding, Alex Hearn, Ogg, Jo Ray, Gina Huntley and new goalkeeper Anna Neish.
An unfortunate own goal made the score 2-1 to Gillingham and despite several breaks by Lucy Fortescue and Chloe Carter-Miles, Weymouth were unable to score again and conceded another three goals.
