BOXING: Dorchester ace Sol shows an ambitious side
6:10pm Monday 21st October 2013 in Sport
SOL Gilday-Evans punched his way to the regional round of the National Ambition Championships with a unanimous points victory over Kristian Sprangle in Bristol.
The Dorchester & District ABC fighter will now take his place in the next stage of the competition in Portsmouth alongside stablemate Joe Malpas.
Gilday-Evans went into his round two clash with Mayflower ABC’s Sprangle having beaten his rival before, although on that occasion it took all his strength to get the verdict.
Sprangle was straight into fight mode from the start and it certainly looked like he had studied the Dorchester boxer’s unorthodox style.
The Mayflower member confidently took the lead as Gilday-Evans found he had to dig deep and use all his natural skills and talent to keep on top of his opponents’ heavy blows.
In round two, it was Gilday-Evans who displayed his hunger and ability by boxing behind a good defence and taking Sprangle’s sharp jabs in his stride.
He answered any punishment with clean crosses, uppercuts and combinations, and his driving ambition and huge heart were going to play a big part in him getting the decision.
Sprangle came out for the final round desperately trying to stop Gilday-Evans from raining down more shots, relentlessly looking to apply pressure.
But Gilday-Evans surged forward and backed Sprangle on to the ropes, swarming all over him with a ready supply of punches up to the final bell.
Coach Ben Geyser said: “Sol certainly finished on a high note and both boxers deserve credit, together they produced one of the most exciting bouts held during an evening of the highest standard of boxing.
“Sol has worked really hard and truly deserved this win. His fitness, dedication, motivation and skill make him an explosive opponent.
“This boy has the potential to go the distance.”
