BASKETBALL: College support for Weymouth court stars
6:30pm Monday 21st October 2013 in Sport
WITH a renewal agreement in place, Weymouth Basketball Club is set to continue its success of last season, which included capturing under-12 and 14 local league titles.
Community partner Weymouth College has returned to boost the junior section, providing support and facilities as the club aims to improve participation across the area.
Brendan Black, duty manager at Redlands Community Sports Hub and Weymouth College Sports Centre, said: “We’re very happy to partner again with one of Weymouth’s most popular and upcoming sports.”
With continued support over the past three seasons and four different age groups (under-9/12/14/16), basketball looks to have a serious place within youth development in the borough.
Performance has not been the only emphasis, with the aim of providing a safe and secure place for young people to express themselves, with a view towards healthy living and social skills.
Club development officer Alex Fuhrmann, pictured, added: “Any young person with an interest in basketball has an opportunity to play in a safe environment.
“With the support of the college and our coaching staff we have been able to further slash playing fees for junior players, hoping that we can compete against the traditional sports.”
Potential players are viewed in school years, ranging from reception up to Year 11, and are welcome to attend and discuss playing.
Weymouth Basketball Club is able to offer two free sessions to those new youngsters who are interested in participating and all queries should go through weymouthbasketball.co.uk Training times: Saturdays – Under-9, 11.30am-12.30pm; Under-12, 11.30am-1pm; Under-16, 1pm-2.30pm; Under-14, 2.30pm-4pm
