RUGBY: Dorchester crash out as injuries take toll
TROWBRIDGE 19 DORCHESTER 3
CAPTAIN James Newsam was forced to sit out Dorchester’s Dorset & Wilts Cup quarter-final at Trowbridge in a tie the county town side eventually went on to lose.
The visitors’ injury worries escalated in training before the match when Newsam, pictured right, suffered a damaged hand, which kept him on the sidelines.
That and unavailability of several other players forced coach Martyn Peel into making a number of changes to the starting line-up.
Playing for the first time at Trowbridge’s impressive new ground, Dorchester matched their hosts for the entire first half and turned around only 7-3 down.
Jamie Morgan opened the scoring with a well-struck penalty but the hosts, a point below the visitors in Southern Counties South, crossed for a try after Dorchester lost the ball while trying to run out of defence rather than using the wind to kick for field position.
Facing the wind and the slight slope in the second period, Dorchester were always going to be up against it but the tackling was much-improved and, despite spending most of the half defending, they only conceded two tries.
This was especially commendable as, at one point, they were reduced to 12 men with Lee King and both Gower brothers, Dave and Tom, sitting in the sin-bin.
Once again there were positives to be taken from the performance, if not the result, but Dorchester will be keen to end their current run of defeats on Saturday when they welcome North Dorset to Coburg Road.
Dorchester: Warren, Miners, Cottell (Hodgson 40), Dixon (L King 50), Jones, Bowden, Hosfold, Sergison, D Gower, Harding, Clark, Devine, C King, K Fry (T Gower 60), Morgan.
Man of the Match: Mark Sergison
