BEES: Hopkinson strikes to rock Bridport
BRIDPORT 2 WILLAND ROVERS 3
BRIDPORT failed to build on Ryan Dovell’s early strike as they slipped to defeat at a blustery St Mary’s Field.
The hosts led at half-time but two quick goals from Willand midfielder Bobby Hopkinson turned the game on its head before the dangerous Luke Alden added a third late on.
An own goal by James Clampin in injury time gave the Bees some hope of snatching a point but the visitors held on for the victory.
The Toolstation Western League Premier Division match was just three minutes old when Darren Watts’ shot fell to the feet of an unmarked Dovell and he gave Willand keeper Paul Gibbins no chance from close range.
But the hosts were unable to add a second and it was Willand, and Alden in particular, that posed the greater threat for the remainder of the half.
Ashley Weeks, in for first-choice stopper Sam Fil-kins, had a few saves to make in the Bridport goal although in truth neither keeper was severely tested during the first period.
Had it not been for a remarkable sequence of events two minutes into the second half, the Bees would have doubled their advantage.
Dovell met a Dan Wise corner, a defender on the line deflected his effort onto the bar, it hit Gibbins on the head and fell to Shane Evans but the Brid-port defender’s header was hacked away.
And then in the space of four minutes the visitors were in front. First, Josh Wadham’s shot fell to Hopkinson to convert then the latter cracked a superb drive past Weeks to make it 2-1.
It could have been 3-1 had Evans not got back to block Dean Stamp’s close-range attempt and Bridport’s frustration was evident when Chris Luke was booked for dissent.
Willand picked up a few bookings too but the result was put beyond doubt when Alden dribbled his way into the box and fired past Weeks in the 87th minute.
Clampin’s own goal proved only to be a consolation as Bridport followed up Saturday’s disappointing draw against Slimbridge with another below-par performance.
