HOOKED: Ryan reels in best bag at Ringstead
MEMBERS of Weymouth AS met at Ringstead Bay to fish their monthly shore competition.
Conditions were not easy with strong southerly winds and rough seas bringing in plenty of weed for anglers to contend with.
Not put off by the weather, a good variety of species were caught including corkwing, wrasse, pollack, pouting, and shore rockling.
Richie King landed a fine bass of 2.05kg and Gerald Barnes bagged the first shore-caught conger in a monthly shore competition for a number of years, which puts him in with a good chance of winning the Conger Trophy.
Ryan Casey took top honours and best junior with a bag weight of 4.79kg.
Barnes was runner-up with his bag of 4.05kg and Phil Cheese-man took third spot with 4.45kg.
Cheeseman also claimed best specimen with his ballen wrasse of 1.34kg, while Barnes had the heaviest fish with his 2.77kg conger and top lady was Jane Johns with 0.49kg.
A fresh southerly wind and 2-2.5m swells made for interesting conditions – and while the rain held off until the end, the wind wiped the top off the waves making for a wet evening.
Casting can be difficult in conditions where the wind is straight on to the beach, cutting back on distance and possibly the fish to be had.
Three of the anglers who chose to fish single-hooked rigs to get more distance fared better than those who chose to fish two or three hooked rigs, which showed in the final results. Pete Taylor fished to the western end of the beach for his winning bag of pout, dogfish, garfish, pollack and poor cod for a total weight of 9lb 5oz.
Andy Ellard was second, fishing to the left by the reed beds with his bag of pout and a codling for a total of 7lb 5oz and Andy Alcock finished third, fishing 100 yards to the left of Taylor, with his bag of dogfish and pout for 5lb 30z.
Ellard also had the heaviest round fish with his codling of 3lb 3oz and the best specimen on the night with his pout of 1lb 12oz, which was 116.667 per cent of specimen weight.
