BEES: Cup focus can give Bridport a boost
MELKSHAM TOWN v BRIDPORT
BRIDPORT put league football to one side tomorrow with a trip to Melksham Town in the preliminary round of the Les Phillips Cup (3pm).
Some may see it as a welcome distraction from the league for the Bees, but boss Trevor Senior is just eager for his men to turn their season around.
They will have to do it without Chris Luke and Max Buckler, while Tom Richardson is a doubt, although Sam Filkins returns between the sticks after missing the 3-2 loss to Willand Rovers in midweek.
With Luke, Buckler and possibly Richardson missing, Senior is going to have to dip into the reserves for a couple of players to include in the match-day squad.
Melksham won in the league for the third time this season when beating Sherborne 1-0 last Saturday and sit just a point behind the Bees in the table.
The Wiltshire outfit have actually won four of the last six in all competitions, while Bridport have gone five without a win in the Toolstation Western League Premier Division.
“It doesn’t make much difference whether we are playing in the league or the cup,” said Senior. “We need to get a run going.
“I thought we played better on Tuesday than we did against Slimbridge – it was all about the timing of the goals.
“We were 1-0 up at half-time and, if we’d made it two when we had three chances in 20 seconds at the start of the second half, we probably would have gone on and won the game.
“We didn’t do that and when they scored you could see it lift them and they ran out quite comfortable winners.”
He added: “Melksham are just below us in the league so, in some ways, we know what we are going to be up against.
“They had a change of manager about a month ago and their results have improved, although it could depend on the weather tomorrow.
“Their pitch is known for being heavy and it could be a doubt, but if it’s on, we’ll go up there and do our best to get a good result.”
Bridport follow up tomorrow’s fixture with a Dorset Senior Cup second-round tie at home against Sherborne Town next Tuesday (7.45pm).
