VOLLEYBALL: Two-year plan for Weymouth
9:00pm Friday 25th October 2013 in Sport
WEYMOUTH Women’s Volleyball Club have finalised their direction for the next two years, with a programme of fixtures that will see them play top domestic volleyball as well as taking on European clubs.
The standard of players representing Weymouth at present makes it difficult for the club to enter National League.
This is due to most of the squad being Super 8 standard, the top level of English Volleyball.
League rules state that new teams must enter the league at Division Three level, four divisions below Weymouth’s current standard.
Instead, Weymouth will enter the 2014 National Knockout Cup with real prospects of reaching the latter stages.
Linked to this, the club will play the two top ranking tournaments in the country – the Dorking Tournament in June 2014 and Volleyfest at Crystal Palace in September.
Between the two tournaments, Weymouth have a confirmed tour of Europe, which will see the team play top Continental matches in Strasbourg, Munich, Milan and Geneva.
The team will be coached by Ian Loke and he has had confirmation of commitment from all of the squad that was so successful during the summer.
This includes the Italian trio of Rossana Logudice, Marta Cerri and Chiara Martello.
They will play Super 8 League volleyball for Swiss Cottage this season.
Also involved will be the Munich-based pairing of Ramona Dienel and Nadine Klugge.
Both of these players have been instrumental in arranging the Munich leg of Weymouth’s European Tour.
In the meantime, Weymouth will play a series of friendly domestic matches against Super 8 and Division One teams, as well as visiting local schools to promote the game and encourage youngsters to take up the sport.
