RUGBY: Weymouth set up Dorchester date
BLANDFORD SECONDS 19
WEYMOUTH SECONDS 29
WEYMOUTH will host rivals Dorchester in the last eight of the Dorset & Wilts Second XV Shield thanks to a hard-fought win at Blandford.
The hosts’ first try was scored by Joel Wilson who fought off several tackles to cross under the posts with the extras being added by fly-half Alex Toms.
The visitors continued to press but they were stunned when the Blandford forwards forced their way over for a try.
Weymouth responded and it was a great back line move that resulted in a second try for Wilson.
Blandford kicked long and full-back Lewis Allen broke the defensive line, offloaded to Dean Parker and he found Wilson who ran around the last man to score in the corner.
Now well on top, another try was added when Allen found himself in space out wide and he touched down for his side’s third score.
Both teams attacked with vigour in the second half and Weymouth grabbed a fourth try when Max Vallance wrestled the ball from a maul to feed the forwards.
Mike Orchard, Ryan Keable Kinsella, Dan Bowditch, Jonathan Mason and Kevin Leatham worked their way towards the Blandford line, Vallance picked the ball up five metres out and forced his way across the line. Toms kicked the conversion.
As the game went on, it was Blandford who took the initiative and they scored two quick tries and conversions, but Weymouth had the last laugh with Toms crossing in the far corner.
