TERRAS: Weymouth boss hails cup character
BRENDON King hailed the character of his side following Saturday’s FA Cup exit at the hands of the Iron.
The Terras fought gallantly throughout the tie but despite forcing some late drama their dreams of a spot in the first round eventually evaporated in a 2-1 defeat.
Fifty-three places separated Weymouth from Braintree in the non-League pyramid ahead of kick-off but by the final whistle that gap looked a lot smaller.
King told Echosport: “We had a game-plan and part of that was to keep it tight in the opening 20 minutes and try to get to half-time without conceding.
“However that went out of the window very quickly and after a quarter of an hour we found ourselves with a bit of a mountain to climb.
“At 2-0 down against a Braintree side that are currently lying fourth in the Conference, the lads could have easily dropped their heads but instead they kept going and showed a lot of character and pride.
“We then had a little rally at the end with Sam Poole pulling one back but unfortunately it did not quite happen for us.
“Overall, Braintree deserved their win but we certainly didn’t disgrace ourselves and proved that we can be a match for these sides.”When asked what made the difference on the day, King went on to add: “They were just that bit better in both boxes.
“We lacked that final ball at times and as a result could not carve out as many chances as we would have liked.
“However, I was still pleased with the performance and the boys can hold their heads up high.”
Centre-back Poole has now netted four goals this season and King was full of praise for him afterwards.
He added: “I thought Sam was outstanding. When Nathan and Michael Walker both joined in the summer I told him it would help make him a better player and the progress he is continuing to make is fantastic. People also forget that he is still only 20 years-old.”
Next up for the Terras is a Dorset Senior Cup home tie against Shaftesbury Town tomorrow night (7.45pm).
