FOOTBALL: Ten-man Chickens battle to victory

THE Chickens remain the only unbeaten side left in the Dorset Senior League despite Matt Guilbert’s early sending off at Puddletown Rec.
Guilbert was dismissed for a professional foul with just 15 minutes of the game gone, but the Chickens dug in and went on to win after the hosts were also reduced to 10 men.
Centre-half Guilbert was shown a straight red card after he was adjudged to have brought down the Piddletrenthide striker as the last man.
But although the home side applied some pressure it was the Chickens who had the better chances and went on to dominate.
And when Piddletrenthide lost a player the same way the visitors had, the Chickens struck with Dan Welch heading in a Liam Coles cross.
“It was difficult going down to 10 men so early in the game,” said Chickens’ manager Steve Cow-ard.
“I thought Matt played the ball but he did come in from behind and if the referee was going to give a free-kick he had to send him off.
“They got on top for a bit but we ended up playing the better football with 10 men and eventually got the goal late in the second half.
“When you lose a man it makes you work that much harder and our lads showed great character to dig in for as long as they did.
“You are going to get games like that where things aren’t going to go your way with important decisions.
“But it’s how you respond to those setbacks. It was an uphill battle for us after Matt went off so we were obviously very happy to come out on top.”
Coward welcomes former side Portland United Reserves to the Stalls this Saturday, looking to keep up the pressure on league leaders Sturminster Marshall.
