UPWEY & BROADWEY 3

STURMINSTER NEWTON 1

LEWIS Ironside answered Upwey & Broadwey’s SOS call before finding the net on a whirlwind afternoon for the midfielder.

Facing the prospect of starting the Dorset Senior League match with only 10 players, Upwey defender Steve Alcock set the wheels in motion for Ironside to join from Portland United.

And after the Blues agreed to Upwey’s request, the relevant paperwork was signed in the Upwey dressing room at Red-lands just before they were due to go out on the pitch.

The signing proved to be an inspired one with the former Weymouth man getting the first of his side’s three goals. Ethan Devaney and stand-in skipper Richie Frost got the other two.

“We were really struggling for a side with people out injured and Lee Pattison not able to make it for the start of the game,” said Upwey boss Steve Reynolds.

“Fortunately, we managed to sign Lewis at the last minute and that was mainly down to Steve Alcock, who was also our man of the match.

“We went 1-0 up on 25 minutes when Lewis headed in Charlie Kenderdine’s corner and it stayed that way until half-time.

“Ethan Devaney got our next goal with a quality finish and even though they pulled one back Richie Frost came up from the back and scored a cracking header.”

He added: “It was a good all round performance and when we get our injured players back I think we can be quite a force.

“We had people like Richie Frost playing out of position on Saturday with Phil Anderson out injured, so it wasn’t easy.

“And we were better than we had been the previous week. The attitude was there and Steve drove all the lads forward and they responded to him.

“Tony Wyatt has gone to Australia for three months so Nick Gregg was back in goal and everything he did, he did well.”
