BRENDON King watched intently from the stands as the Terras secured a 4-0 win over Bridport in the last eight of the Dorset Senior Cup tonight.

Following Saturday’s humiliation at Stourbridge, the Weymouth boss could have easily torn into his players before the tie but instead chose to put the recriminations on the backburner instead.

King missed the 7-0 thrashing at the War Memorial Ground at the weekend due to work commitments but has already intimated this week that there will be consequences for those squad members that are currently underperforming.

When asked what he said to his players before the game, King told Echosport: “I am going to talk to the entire squad at training on Thursday.

“I could have done it last night but we decided not to mention anything about Stourbridge and focus on the game instead. I wanted to see how they responded as individuals and we will now be expecting an even bigger reaction against St Albans on Saturday.

“The Stourbridge defeat has gone but it is certainly not forgotten.”

King chose to field a strong starting XI against the Bees that consisted entirely of first-team squad players.

However, two players that were left off the team-sheet altogether were Michael and Nathan Walker, who also watched from the stands. Jamie Symes and Luke Winsper were absent too due to illness and injury respectively.

Commenting on why the Walker brothers did not feature, King added: “We have got some big games coming up and we wanted to look at other things and give other players some minutes.

“Had Jamie and Luke been fit they would have played too and we would have probably mixed it up a bit more but overall I was pleased with the performance.

“Not only did we score some good goals but we had lots of possession and also kept a clean sheet, which was pleasing.

“It was also good to see the likes of Matt Cafer, Adam Anstey and Carl McClements all get run outs.

“All in all it was a decent workout and one I think we needed.”

Mark Ford opened the scoring for the Terras on 29 minutes following a clever one-two with Matt Groves before Scott Walker turned in Luke Burbidge’s fine cross for the second.

Darren Watts then nodded a good chance over the bar for the Bees midway through the second half before headers from Sam Poole and Stewart Yetton finally completed the scoring in the closing stages.

Bridport boss Trevor Senior said: “I think the scoreline flattered them a bit in the end but it all comes down to finishing and they took their chances well.

“They had two opportunities in the first half and stuck them both away before we then had a good spell after the break but couldn’t make it count.

“Had Darren’s header gone in from Dan Wise’s superb cross we would have been right back in it but in the end we tried to push on in the closing stages and ended up getting caught out twice more.

“Overall I thought we gave a decent account of ourselves and if we play like that at Longwell Green on Saturday I will be more than happy.”
