PLAYERS from Dorchester and Moonfleet could be excused for feeling that they had seen too much of each other lately when they clashed in three different competitions in the space of 24 hours, with overall honours going to the seaside club.

Denny Cup

MOONFLEET 81 DORCHESTER 65

MOONFLEET sent Warwick Brown, Pete Read, Doug Rumble and Steve Gait to Dorchester where they lost 16-12 to the home four of Gary Mumford, Colin Gifford, George Spracklen and Nick Voss, but this proved to be the only success for the county town side.

The companion travelling Moonfleet rink of Geoff Whitehead, Alf Sawkins, Mike Gale and skip Martin Puckett secured the best performance of the day in winning 24-10 against Terry Greenman, Ged Costello, Alan Curtis and Jamie Lockwood.

The Moonfleet home rinks had closer encounters. The county town four of Brian Paulson, Phil Hallett, Eddy Young and Dean Curtis took a 6-0 lead against Keith Wyman, Mike Durrant, Chris Cook and Warren Smith, only to fall 15-7 behind.

The exchange moved in Dorchester’s direction, enabling them to level at 17-17. Smith finally took the spoils with a double brace and a 21-17 win.

Veteran Mike Goddard, Doug Obee, Ron McCarthy and evergreen Moonfleet skip Barry Patterson seemed to be romping to a huge win when 23-10 to the good.

Just when it seemed that the local derby would not produce at least one surprise incident, Dorchester four Dave Joslin, Frank Gwatkin, Paul Boundy and Adam Tidby got their act together and narrowed the gap to two shots (24-22).

Moonfleet now meet Torbay later this month in the last 32 of the competition.

Egham Trophy

DORCHESTER 68 MOONFLEET 94

ALTHOUGH the final winning margin of 26 shots suggested a dominant display from Moonfleet, this was far from true in the early part of the game when the Dorchester home rink of Sylvia Lawley, Barbara Follis, Terry Greenman and skip Ged Costello went 7-0 up against Moonfleet’s Amanda Williams, Kath Desmond, Ron McCarthy, and Barry Patterson.

The second home Dorchester rink comprising Sue Maggs, Peter Stevenson, Sue Jennings and Rob Jennings also took command against Moonfleet’s Martin Puckett, Gad Holmes, June Searle and Doug Rumble to go 10-4 ahead.

However, the all-round experience of Moonfleet, who were fielding seven full county players, enabled the visitors to gain the upper hand.

Patterson beat Costello 26-18 and the battling Jennings went down 23-19 to Puckett.

Playing at Moonfleet, Dorchester had mixed fortunes. Julie Corbin, Isabelle Addison, Alan Curtis and Dean Curtis had a battle royale against Moonfleet’s Mary Mathie, Rose White, Keith Wyman and Chris Cook and the sides were locked together for most of the game, which finally went to Cook (20-18).

Frank Follis, Eve Peavoy, Sheila Baker and Jamie Lockwood struggled against their Moonfleet opponents – Margaret Hooper, Thelma Nash, Alf Sawkins and Warren Smith – who recorded a match-winning 25-13 card.

County Mixed League

DORCHESTER 79 MOONFLEET 76

THIS Mixed League result provided some comfort for Dorchester who had to work hard to get the better of a sturdy Moonfleet squad.

Playing at Sandringham allowed Dave Caundle, Janet Nicholas, Di Lunn and David Bonnett to take advantage of the home carpet and secure what proved to be a match-winning performance as they rattled up 23 shots and conceded 10 to Carol Rod, Ruth Neary, Kevin Churchill and Ashley Welsh.

The companion Dorchester quartet of Charles Starkey, Fran Dyer, Jill Bonnett and John Dyer saw the initiative swing one way and then the other, with neither getting the upper hand. Mary Corbin, Sheila Goddard, Jack Mathie and Mike Goddard eventually picked up two shots on the 21st end for Moonfleet to finish all square at 20-20.

A similar pattern evolved at Moonfleet with a draw and a comfortable win for the home side.

Diane Edwards, Tony Alston, Ruby Spavins and Colin Poulter earned an 18-18 draw against Robin Hilton, Jan Hart, Gwen Caundle and skip Gordon Ayers, who came back from 12-4 down to share the spoils.

The second Dorchester travelling rink of Colin Lawley, Sue Lofthouse, Jan Cherry and Barry Day started well, but a dropped five didn’t help the cause and their opponents – Monique Gandi, Peter White, Anne White and skip StJ Corben – moved on to win 26-16.

The aggregate score gave Dorchester a three-shot victory and eight points to Moonfleet’s five.
