RECENT results may have cost Brendon King his job but he will always look back at his time at the helm of the Terras with pride.

The board removed King as manager yesterday evening, along with his assistant Matt Groves, following a run of seven defeats in 10 league games.

That wretched spell of form has left Weymouth in 16th place in the Calor Southern Premier Division – a long way off the top-six finish King had his eyes set on at the start of the season.

Club chairman Nigel Biddlecombe, who appeared to back King following Monday’s 3-2 loss at Hitchin Town, released the following statement on behalf of the board late last night: "Manager Brendon King and assistant manager Matt Groves have been relieved of their duties at Weymouth Football Club, following the recent run of poor results.

“Experienced goalkeeper, Jason Matthews, will become caretaker manager and will be assisted by Micky Greeno, Jake Richmond, Paul Maitland and Rex Buttle at tomorrow’s fixture with Banbury.

“Weymouth Football Club will advertise for a new manager and – with Matthews agreeing to a short-term arrangement – will take advantage of the time to ensure that the right person is appointed to the manager’s seat.

“On behalf of the board and supporters of the club I want to express our gratitude to Brendon and Matt for their efforts, often in difficult circumstances.

“We wish them both well for the future.”

King was obviously very disappointed after receiving the news but also told Echosport that his time in the hot-seat had been a privilege.

He said: “Both Matt and I are obviously bitterly disappointed.

“We have given it a good shot but the results have not been good enough over the last couple of months and there is no doubting the fact that they should have been better.

“These things happen in football all the time and now I can have a nice little rest, put my feet up over Christmas and just take stock.”

When asked whether he will look back at his tenure with fond memories, he went on to add: “At the end of the day I have had the privilege of playing and managing my hometown club and not many people can say that.

“We have had some highs and some lows, and with all the political stuff that has gone on within the club over the last few years it has been hard.

“Ultimately though, you are only as good as your last lot of results and like I said, they haven’t been good enough.

“One thing is for sure whoever comes in after me will inherit some decent players and hopefully they can help take the club on further.”

* Brendon King's two-and-a-half year reign at the Terras saw him take charge of 163 games.

His record was as follows: 72 wins, 32 draws, 59 defeats - a percentage win ratio of 44.17%

In terms of league fixtures his record was: 102 games, 38 wins, 20 draws, 44 defeats - a percentage win ratio of 37.25%

In both cases, he holds the best results ratio at the Terras since Garry Hill's tenure.
